Light for Your Path Part 3
Every year our family celebrates Hanukkah or the Feast of the Dedication. Jesus celebrated this feast as we can see in the book of John 10:22, “And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.23And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.” Our children get so excited about this time of year, because we give them gifts and make ‘Potato Latkes’. We tell again the wonderful story of how our God miraculously kept the Temple candlestick lit for eight days with only one days supply of oil. We then go on to teach them how He came in human flesh as Jesus Christ. The Bible says in John chapter one that all things were made by Him. Verse Five says that the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not. The same chapter teaches that He was in the world and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.
John the Revelator saw Jesus while he was exiled on the Isle of Patmos and described His countenance as the sun shineth in his strength and He said to John, “I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 1:18.
We can give gifts and fix traditional food, and it is such a good thing, but the greatest thing we can give our children is faith in Jesus Christ. No other gift has such lasting value. When we light our Menorah I am always reminded of the old Sunday School song verse we still sing , “This little light of mine. I’m going to let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
